The Girls on the Run program inspires girls to chase their dreams and recognize their accomplishments — and those of their teammates — big and small.

Feeling recognized after achieving a goal is a deeply impactful experience that carries significant mental health benefits. Being acknowledged and celebrated for hard work meets the basic human need for appreciation and visibility, validating the effort and dedication that went into reaching a milestone. When individuals feel seen and valued, they are more likely to engage in future endeavors, pursue future challenges, and set higher goals.

So, how can we (as well as our kids) celebrate the accomplishments of families, peers, and fellow community members? With genuine compliments that recognize the heart and soul they poured into the newly achieved goal.

Sharing compliments that recognize our loved one’s hard work can transform their feeling of personal satisfaction into one that inspires others. By taking one’s hat off to another person’s achievement, this fosters an environment of encouragement and sets a trend of motivation in motion for all. It also underscores the importance of not just achieving goals but being part of a community (even if it’s just two people speaking) that celebrates these accomplishments together.

So, the next time a loved one crosses a finish line (yes, we’re still in the 5K spirit), passes a class, completes a project, stands up for themselves, or simply overcomes a challenge, consider sharing (or encourage your girl to share) one of these 17 compliments!
