#GOTRVoices: The Importance of Serving Your Community
When Abigail participated in Girls on the Run in 2012 as a 9-year-old, she wasn’t sure what she wanted to be when she grew up, but she always knew she wanted to serve her community in some way. As she said, “It’s important to give back to my community because I see a lot of help needed, and the best way to do that is to volunteer.”
About a year and a half ago, Abigail decided to become a volunteer firefighter. However, when she joined the training class at her local fire department, she faced challenges because she was the youngest member — and one of the few females — in her class.
Despite the obstacles she had to overcome, she persevered to reach her goal. Abigail stated, “Girls on the Run helped me get to where I am by building my confidence, building my strength and knowing that if I set goals for myself, I can achieve them if I work for them.”
