In this blog, we highlight what sets Camp GOTR apart from other summer activities and shout out several Girls on the Run councils and their campers’ 2024 Camp GOTR experiences.

Summer is a time for exploration, growth, and fun in the sun. For many parents, finding summer break activities that are both enriching and enjoyable can be a challenge. Camp GOTR combines parts of our evidence-based program with the joy and energy of summertime fun, making it an excellent camp choice for 3rd– to 5th-grade girls from coast to coast. During the week-long session, campers build friendships in an energizing and welcoming setting that includes interactive games, physical activities, and creative projects, including arts, crafts, and storytelling. Led by caring and qualified volunteer coaches, Camp GOTR provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity for girls to develop self-confidence and learn life skills they can bring back into the classroom and use for the rest of their lives.

Check out these 5 reasons why Camp GOTR is an Ideal Summer Activity for Girls!

Promotes Physical Fitness and Healthy Habits

Even though school, recess, and many sports programs are over, Camp GOTR helps girls maintain an active lifestyle through fun and engaging movement-based activities. In an era where screen time often dominates free time (especially when school is out), Camp GOTR encourages girls to get outside and find joy in movement! Regular physical activity during the summer helps improve cardiovascular health, build strength, and enhance overall fitness. Additionally, it supports the mental health of girls at critical time in their development. Physical activity helps reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and it increases energy levels and boosts your mood.

Increases Confidence and Self-Esteem

As with all of our programming, the core goals of Camp GOTR are to help girls develop confidence, learn life skills, and activate their unique Star Power. Through the camp’s various activities, girls learn to set and achieve goals, which teaches them they possess the power to live their dreams. Like any plan or pursuit, road bumps are bound to occur along the way, so participants also learn resilience and the satisfaction that comes from overcoming obstacles, both in the program and in life. And the best part of all? This learning is done in a nurturing, judgment-free smallgroup setting!

Develops Social Connections and Teamwork

After the school year ends, some girls often feel lonely and disconnected from their peers. Camp GOTR helps fill this void by providing a supportive environment where participants can build friendships that last over the summer and into the school year! The camp’s thoughtful lessons emphasize the value of teamwork and positive relationships by teaching participants how to communicate effectively and support and encourage one another. Throughout the week of fun, girls have opportunities to meet new people, step outside of their comfort zone, and feel proud of what they bring to the team!

Builds Life Skills and Personal Growth

Even though school’s out over summer break, Camp GOTR teaches girls life skills that extend far beyond the classroom. These skills go beyond physical fitness pointers that will benefit them in gym class or in sports. During group discussions and coach-girl conversations, participants dive into relevant topics such as self-awareness, emotional regulation, and community involvement. And trust us, as vital and serious as these lessons are, they were intentionally designed and presented in a way that’s a total blast for the girls! So, as participants are learning and growing as people, they are smiling, laughing, and making memories along the way.

Nurtures Girls’ Creativity

Participating in creative activities during summer break positively impacts kids’ development and overall well-being. At Camp GOTR, participants stimulate their imaginations while developing problem-solving skills and innovative thinking. Creating a colorful, unique project also boosts girls’ confidence and serves as a healthy outlet for kids to express their emotions and feelings.
